A$AP Twelvyy: "Little After Sunset" Review

By Cori Carpenter

asap-twelvyy-1200x800.jpg

A$AP Twelvyy, from the notorious hip hop collective A$AP Mob, features alongside PineappleCITI on Sam Silver’s “Little After Sunset”. This track brings juxtaposition to a new level. Starting off at a steady pace, Twelvyy’s flow opens up the track spitting lyrics about the ups and downs of relationships. A song of transitions, his flow is sped up steadily and climaxes into a dance/electronic break. PineappleCITI, a rising hip hop artist/songwriter, enters the track as the break fades out, almost like the song is restarting. CITI is singing, speaking on broken hearts and breakups, before breaking into rap. Her verse ends in the same dance/electronic break and the track finishes. The opening line of the song couldn’t be more perfect. “This how music make you feel”, is the most accurate description for the trip that this track is. It’s a slow ride with unexpected turns, but all to be enjoyed in the end and enough fun to leave you wanting more. Twelvyy is introducing a new side of versatility with this track and newer fans like myself are here to enjoy every bit of it. A$AP Twelvyy and PineappleCITI on top of Sam Silver’s production is an unexpected combination, but what each individual artist brought to this track is what makes it extremely impressive. But if you want to be taken on a real ride, go watch the chronicles of “Little After Sunset” in the trippy animated music video. The elements of this collaboration know no limits and this track is one of the best showcases for the new wave of music to come in 2021.

A$AP Twelvyy and Sam Silver cross unlikely paths on ‘New Beginnings’

asap-twelvyy-puma-tsugi-netfit-2.jpeg

2020 certainly seems to be A$AP Twelvyy’s year. Though it has only been a few months since the A$AB Mob member released Before Noon, Twelvyy’s first studio record since his 2017 debut 12, this week the Harlem icon returns with a collaboration with producer Sam Silver. While Before Noon was an exercise in Twelvyy doing what he does best, synthesizing intricate wordplay and melodic delivery over hard-hitting mixes - as seen on tracks like ‘Daytona’ and ‘Baby Driver’ featuring A$AP Ant - this week fans are treated to an innovative and subversive track from one of A$AP Mob’s lesser-known members.

‘New Beginnings’ is a rare moment of introspection from Twelvyy. On this track he delivers lines like “Had to make it happen, took the whole day. Tryna make it home, I took the wrong way“ over Sam Silver’s lurching electronic bass patterns and ethereal and ambient melodies. This style of music is not what you may think of when you think about A$AP Mob, but A$AP Twelvyy does a phenomenal job of lending his efforts to Silver’s production in order to create a chill yet energizing track.  If you’re unfamiliar with producer Sam Silver, he’s a 17-year old powerhouse that has spent the past few months pushing out releases after his 2017 project DIRECTORS CHOICE. Some of his tracks have reached six-figure streaming numbers on Spotify, and it’s not hard to see why. After a brief verse where A$AP Twelvyy dwells on fame, luxury, and personal growth, the vocals contort and speed up as the track transforms into a thundering house instrumental contrasted with aggressive kick drums. ‘New Beginnings’ is just that for both Twelvyy and Silver. It is an embrace of change and success, working past prior personal frustrations in favor of a life of glamour, art, and paparazzi. It is hard to deny the talent of either Twelvyy or Silver, and given both of the artists’ demonstrated versatility on this track, weaving together hip-hop and electronic music styles, it may be fair to say this will not be their last collaboration.

You can stream the track on Spotify and Soundcloud now using the link below. Hopefully, this means we’re poised to get more music from the two artists soon, but if not, ‘New Beginnings’ will surely hold fans over until then.

New Songs of the Week:

“Racks In The Middle” by Nipsey Hustle (Feat. Roddy Rich & Hit-Boy)

Racks In The Middle (feat. Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy), a song by Nipsey Hussle, Roddy Ricch, Hit-Boy on Spotify

2018 was without a doubt the best year of Nipsey Hustle’s career. He finally managed to break into the mainstream with the Grammy nominated Victory Lap and his first release of 2019 picks up right where he left off. There’s so much to like in “Racks In The Middle” from Nipsey’s witty wordplay and catchy LA dialect to Hit-Boy’s polished instrumental. While we love the contributions from these two talented artists, it’s Roddy Rich’s hook that steals the show. His lyrics are authentic and impactful and his syncopated deliver is absolutely addicting. We can only hope there are more Roddy Nipsey collabs in the near future.

Limo tint the V-12, double check the details
Gotta cross my T’s and dot my I’s or I can’t sleep well
Millions off of retail
Once again, I prevail
Knew that shit was over from the day I dropped my presale
— Nipsey Hustle "Racks In The Middle"

“SOMETHING REAL” by ADÉ (Feat. GoldLink & Wale)

SOMETHING REAL (feat. GoldLink & Wale), a song by ADÉ, GoldLink, Wale on Spotify

DMV rapper ADÉ (previously known as Phil Ade) dropped his first release under his new name this past Thursday. Always Something is a six song EP featuring Lil Baby, Rich the Kid, GoldLink, and Wale. “Something Real” is groovy, entertaining, and definitely the best track on the tape. The song features GoldLink and Wale who both fit the pulsing instrumental perfectly. The three MCs all seem to complement each other perfectly and the way this song flows from verse to verse is flawless. I would highly recommend listening to this whole project, but if you don’t have 18 minutes to spare, make sure to at least check out this wavy cut.

Every bitch I got they got a bag
Bet your bitches make it hard to brag
Pardon partner that’s the part they pat your pockets
Don’t you pop off like you popping tags
— Wale "SOMETHING REAL"

“Thug In Me” by Berner & Mozzy (Feat. Godholly)

Thug In Me (feat. Godholly), a song by Berner, Mozzy, Godholly on Spotify

Somewhere in this vast universe Tupac is smiling down on Mozzy and Berner as they take LA back 20 years to G-Funk and gangsta rap. “Thug In Me” is the hottest single off their new album Slimy Individualz (review here) and is inspiring old heads everywhere to roll up and go for a ride. Berner and Mozzy both body verses on this joint and Mozzy’s layered vocals on the hook is more than reminiscent of Pac’s confrontational choruses. “Thug In Me” is gangsta rap with modern production and it works so damn well.

Body for body, nigga, we body shit
Blood spark on the Masi’ and that’s what got him hit
— Mozzy "Thug In Me"

THROWBACK SONG OF THE WEEK:

“Trilla” by A$AP Rocky (Feat. A$AP Twelvyy & A$AP Nast)

Prod By Beautiful Lou

“Trilla” is an absolutely legendary track and its importance should never be down played. It’s a top track on the tape where Rakim Mayers became A$AP Rocky, one of the most influential artists of our generation. “Trilla” is swagged out to the max and sounds like what it must feel like to be A$AP Rocky. The lack of a hook makes the track sound less like a song and more like the best freestyle you’ve ever heard. Twelvyy and Nast pull through for memorable features and give the song the communal feel that most classic A$AP tracks have. If you don’t know this cut, listen immediately.

My gold teeth, my french braids, getting throwed since 10th grade
Wealth is in the mind, not the pocket, if that’s the case, then I been paid
— A$AP Rocky "Trilla"

New Songs of the Week:

“Child’s Play” By A$AP Twelvyy

Child's Play, a song by A$AP Twelvyy on Spotify

This week A$AP Twelvyy returned to streaming services with his first major release since debut album dropped in 2017. This fast-paced cut about Twelvvy’s childhood is encompassed by an eerie bell riff which gives the song a somewhat threatening nature. This song is multidimensional, full of context, and flexes some of the most complex rhyme schemes we’ve heard this year. With “Child’s Play” being the lead single it’s impossible to not be excited for whatever Twelvyy drops.

Lie to Genesis, Resident Evil: Nemesis
Pissin’ on the premises, pissin’ off the tenements
Baby boy invented this, I used to run the syndicate
Side-to-side, Stretch Armstrong, new ventriloquist
— A$AP Twelvyy “Child’s Play”

“Locationship” By YBN Cordae

Locationships, a song by YBN Cordae on Spotify

On YBN Cordae’s newest single “Locationships” he pays homage to Jay-Z’s legendary “Girls, Girls, Girls.” In true Hov fashion, Cordae bounces back and forth between short descriptions of all his side chicks across the country. These excerpts are hilarious and are executed precisely making this bouncy bop super entertaining. Throughout his young career, my biggest concern about Cordae has been his ability to write hooks. This issue is nonexistent on “Locationships” as Cordae serves up an addicting chorus that you won’t be able to get out of your head. Lastly, the groovy S1 instrumental ties everything together and gives the song the desired mood.

I got this one chick from the Bay who always bump Mac Dre
I give her constant dick, her consciousness won’t go that way
— YBN Cordae “Locationships”

“BigStuff” By TROSSTHEGIANT

BigStuff, a song by TROSSTHEGIANT on Spotify

Here at StereoVision, we know little about SoCal rapper TROSSTHEGIANT. What we do know is that his new single “BigStuff” is one of the most fun releases of the year. This energetic beach-cut seems to instantly transport me to a sunny day on the water whenever I hit play. TROSS’s earnest confidence is palpable throughout the infectious track and it feels so good. After “BigStuff” TROSSTHEGIANT certainly has my attention and he should have yours too.

A grey check make my rep go and plummet
I break bread in Kobe’s, I’m so lovely
Hit 100k checklist, done it
Never tripped on plays, they rays kept bugging
— TROSSTHEGIANT “BigStuff”

Throwback Song of the Week:

“Lord Knows” By Drake (Feat. Rick Ross)

Lord Knows, a song by Drake, Rick Ross on Spotify

Drake’s three-minute verse at the beginning of his classic Take Care cut “Lord Knows” is the best he’s rapped in his entire career. Drizzy snaps like crazy floating between impactful two-liners which are overtly cocky in the most enjoyable way. The only way to describe this explosion of bars is Drake on his king shit. Rick Ross pulls through to deliver an always welcomed feature and the Just Blaze instrumental is just as epic as the braggadocious bars. If you like Drake, make sure you know this classic cut.

I know of all the things that I hear they be poking fun at
Never the flow though, they know I run that
Fuck you all, I claim that whenever
I changed rap forever, the game back together
— Drake “Lord Knows”
