Last Friday, Young Thug dropped his new album So Much Fun and after one listen I was ready to call it album of the year. There are about eight songs off So Much Fun that could’ve made today’s Songs of the Week but really there was no choice. “What’s The Move” features Philadelphia superstar Lil Uzi Vert and is one of the most fun songs released this year. In large thanks to producer BL$$D the two emcee’s sounds like they are running around a lush jungle swinging from trees and rapping about their exuberant wealth. This song is timeless and when we reflect on it ten years from now we'll see it for what it truly is, two of the most influential and creative artists of our generation at their very best.

Bay Area rapper Nef The Pharaoh continued his annual release pattern this week with his new album Mushrooms & Coloring Books dropping on Friday. The sixth song on the album “Lethal Weapon” is an obvious standout and features fellow Vallejo rapper and member of SOB x RBE, Slimmy B. The two bay rappers go back and forth, normally 4 bars at a time, boasting an impressive display of chemistry and wordplay. The funky yet relaxing DTB instrumental creates a perfect climate for the two rappers to absolutely snap and the result is an extremely unique cut that is one of my favorite songs to drop in August.

A$AP Ferg has always been able to effortlessly craft addicting hooks and on his new project Floor Seats Ferg shows no deviation from his previous strength. The most clear example of this would be the project’s second song, “Jet Lag”. On the high-energy bop, Ferg raps about his expensive lifestyle while frequently alluding to his previous hits through clever bars. On “Jet Lag” Ferg also defends his position as one of the game’s best ad-libbers by hitting the end of every bar with one of his patented sounds.

Chicago rapper Lil Tecca is gaining momentum fast. With a video directed by Cole Bennett, “Ransom” might be the worlds introduction the young buzzing artist. The infectious cut, which is just over two minutes, hosts the young emcee letting the world know he’s next and flexing what he already has. The song is extremely fun and is undoubtably a summer 2019 anthem.

“SPEEDBOAT” by Denzel Curry

Denzel Curry is one of the most talented artists rapping right now and he seems to only be getting better. The Florida emcee is following up his excellent 2018 album TA13OO this Friday (May 31st) with the release of his new album ZUU. “SPEEDBOAT” is the second single to be released from the album and has only added to the excitement already surrounding this new project. The hard-hitting hook will be stuck in your head after one listen and Denzel snaps with two wicked verses.

“Keisha Had A Baby” by YG (Feat. Rose Gold)

LA rapper YG dropped his new album 4REAL 4REAL this past week and it is full of vivid stories and west coast bangers. “Keisha Had A Baby” is the seventh track on the album and features vocals from Rose Gold. The cut is slower than most of YG’s music and is built around beautiful piano chords setting the tone for the slow jam. YG has always been a great storyteller and “Keisha Had A Baby” is another perfect example as we’re introduced to Keisha and her relationship with two different men.

Throwback Song of the Week:

“Ghetto Symphony” by A$AP Rocky (Feat. Gunplay & A$AP Ferg)

“Ghetto Symphony” is a clear standout off of A$AP Rocky’s excellent debut album, LONG.LIVE.A$AP. Rocky is aided by Gunplay and A$AP Ferg on the iconic cut and kills his first verse. Rocky’s fashion raps shine throughout this entire album and are very tastefully scattered throughout his verse on “Ghetto Symphony”. Ferg brings up the rear and sounds absolutely insane on the third verse which fits the mood of the song and ties it up nicely.
